Westmatic no.1

At the beginning of the decade, the very first Westmatic machine, which is delivered to Scania Hovsjö, premieres.

In 1984 Westmatic AB is formed and the name is manifested the first truck wash with the name Westmatic No 1 which is delivered to Scania in Södertälje. No 2 is installed the year after 1985 at Ljungby Lastbilstvätt. A brand within its segments takes place.

In 1988, the first hydraulic 4-brush machine is installed.

Everything starts in 1974 from the drive to develop solutions for an industry with many challenges but also opportunities. Entrepreneur Jan Sundell is passionate from the start for what will become Westmatic's signature; sustainable integrity and efficiency. The following year, 1975, the first water recycling EMÅ-300 is manufactured and another year later, in 1976, a waste bin washer is built in collaboration with Electrolux in Copenhagen.

More than 50 years

More than 50 years have passed since entrepreneur Jan Sundell began servicing vehicle washes, which led to the start of Westmatic. At that time, existing facilities often broke down, whereupon Jan was asked to develop a new Swedish-made vehicle wash. When the first truck wash was delivered in 1984, it was an immediate success. Since then, Westmatic has delivered more than 4,000 washing systems to customers around the world, to almost 20 countries, with the goal of providing all our stakeholders and the world with a sustainable solution for the future. It is truly a great feeling to see a sparkling clean bus rolling down Manhattan in New York and know that that particular bus was washed in a Westmatic facility.

PMI (Preventive Maintenance Inspection) service agreements are available for all Westmatic washers and equipment in operation. PMI programs can be customized to align with the wash loads on the equipment and the needs of the facility. PMI program yearly visits can consist of two, three, four, six, or even twelve visits per year. You decide. We customize. Standard PMI and PMI-Plus programs available.

As a Westmatic PMI program holder, you enjoy special pricing as well. A 15% discount on almost all parts and service.

We utilize only Westmatic factory trained techs for PMI services and customers can expect detailed service reports and PMI checklist after every visit. If suggested repairs are found, quotes will always be supplied.

Regardless of how efficient machine washes are, in many cases there are nooks and crannies where brushes and machine-mounted high-pressure cannot reach 100%. Therefore, washing systems for heavy vehicles are usually supplemented with manual high-pressure washing.

Just like other equipment in Westmatic's washing system, the manual detail washing equipment is also adapted to needs, likes and needs. In addition to high pressure, there are various options to choose from like detergent application, tar dissolver and disinfection, etc.

Rail-running vehicles also come in different variants and shapes. Everything from simpler diesel-powered railcars to aerodynamically designed high-speed trains. This variation in combination with other factors, such as for example the number of trains to be washed, the need for de-icing, graffiti and carcass cleanup, naturally also places demands on how the washing system should be designed.

The most common washing system for rail-running vehicles is Drive-through washing. In these systems, the trains run slowly through the washing system and are guided to start and stop by light signals. The stops that need to be made are so that the front and stern can be washed.

Westmatic Truck Wash System

The most common washing system for truck washing is based on a 3-brush Rollover Machine. This is a very flexible system where fixed washing programs or independently selected functions can be used depending entirely on the type of vehicle and how much dirt has accumulated on the vehicle. A gantry machine can be installed as rail-running or traverse-running based on needs, preferences and needs.

When the volume of vehicles is large and the washing time is crucial, drive-through systems are an advantageous option. In these cases, the system is built on a combination of independent high-pressure washing, application of detergent and finally brush washing.

A 80 ft truck can be washed in about 4 minutes in this system.

For smaller facilities where washing time is not high priority, Manual detail washing can be a good enough alternative. Manual detail washing is usually also included in a wash bay with Rollover machine as a complement, which enables detailed cleaning of spaces that are difficult to access with machine washing.

Generally speaking, a drive-through wash is the fastest system that is normally best suited to bus depots and larger bus companies. With a washing time of only 90 seconds per bus, large volumes can be handled with ease.

In some cases, a Rollover wash may be the better option. This applies in particular when buses with sloping fronts are to be washed, which requires the use of a roof brush. Rollover washes can also be beneficial as the buses are not washed that often and therefore require deeper cleaning and possibly supplementing with some manual detail washing. A gantry wash can also be supplemented with a drive-through program if desired, which provides maximum flexibility.

There are also times when Manual detail washing is sufficient as the only washing equipment. This usually becomes relevant when only a small number of buses are to be washed and the washing time is not decisive.

The compact design of the machine offers reduced wash cycle time and requires a smaller footprint than any other system on the market. (Often requiring half of the wash bay length compared to traditional systems). The COMPACT is manufactured in a 2, 4 and 6 brush model.

CHALLENGE

A system with high efficiency and optimal value over an estimated 15-year period. The system also needed to operate effectively within the available space.

SOLUTION

Westmatic installed four Brush Drive-through Transit Master Systems, designed for high wash volumes and efficiency in limited spaces. RFID tracking makes it easy to monitor wash frequency and cycles for different vehicles. Training provided for users.

RESULT

Various types of vehicles can be washed in a single facility. Reduced costs for electricity, water, and chemicals. The system recycles 85% of the wash water.

We See the Problems Before They Arise.

At a facility that has had a Westmatic machine for at least ten years, consistently reporting good water quality to the municipality, we suddenly discovered extremely high zinc levels in a water sample. Together with the customer, thanks to ingenuity and experience, we were able to trace the source of the deviation.

Most vehicles come to wash along the same route, where new galvanized steel guardrails and wire railings were recently installed. In winter, zinc from these and ends up on the vehicles.

We are aware of and prepared to handle issues that arise and can address them with various adjustments to the treatment plant.

If we are involved early in the planning phase, we can contribute our expertise, ultimately saving the customer both money and complications.

Architects aim to create attractive and functional buildings, where all technology, such as ventilation, lighting, etc., competes for space. They often lack experience with vehicle washes and miss essential details. Large amounts of piping are required, laid in the ground and in the foundation, for transferring large volumes of water between the wash bay, underground tank system, and technical room.

In wash bays, grating is often used to reduce slip hazards on wet floors, which, from a workplace safety perspective, is entirely reasonable. However, if made of galvanized steel, this also increases zinc levels in the water. When we’re involved in early planning, we always point this out and recommend composite grating instead to avoid these deposits. Still, if builders and engineers have already specified galvanized grating, it can sometimes be challenging to influence.

My strong recommendation is to involve us early in projects — the sooner, the better. This contributes to a more efficient planning process with fewer compromises, leading to lower construction costs and reduced environmental impact.

Vi ser problemet innan det uppstår

Vid en anläggning som i åtminstone tio år haft Westmaticmaskin och alltid bra vattenvärden att rapportera till kommunen, upptäckte vi helt plötsligt skyhöga zink-värden för sitt vattenprov som vi planenligt tog runt årsskiftet. Tillsammans med kunden kunde vi tack vare klurighet och erfarenhet, härleda varifrån avvikelsen uppkommit.

De flesta som kommer för att tvätta kommer samma väg, där nya vägräcken och vajerräcken av galvaniserat stål hade monterats. Vintertid urlakas zink ur dessa och hamnar på fordonen.

Vi vet om och har beredskap för att hantera problem som uppstår efter hand och kan åtgärda dessa med olika justeringar i reningsverket. Andra problem kan vi förutse innan anläggningen tas i drift. Kommer vi bara in tidigt i projekteringsfasen, kan vi bidra med vår specialistkompetens som i slutänden besparar kunden både pengar och komplikationer.

Arkitekter vill skapa snygga och funktionella byggnader, där all teknik som ventilation, belysning, etc, krigar om utrymme. Man saknar ofta erfarenhet kring fordonstvättar och missar därför viktiga detaljer. Det behövs bla stora mängder rör av olika slag som förläggs i mark och i grundplattan. Dessa behövs exempelvis för att flytta väldigt stora vattenflöden mellan tvätthall, marktanksystem och teknikrum.

I tvätthallar används ofta gallerdurk för att undvika halkrisk på blöta golv, vilket ur arbetsmiljösynpunkt naturligtvis är högst rimligt. Men är denna av galvaniserat stål ökar detta också halten zink i vattnet. När vi kommer in i projekteringen i ett tidigt skede påtalar vi alltid detta och rekommenderar i stället gallerdurk av komposit för att slippa dessa utfällningar, men har byggare och konstruktörer innan oss specificerat galvaniserat är det ibland svårt att påverka.

Min starka rekommendation är att ta in oss tidigt i projekten, ju tidigare desto bättre.

Det bidrar till en effektivare projekteringsprocess med färre kompromisser som leder till lägre byggkostnad och mindre miljöpåverkan.

Stora resultat på liten yta.
