New Maintenance Facility Keeps Calgary Transit CNG Bus Fleet Washed and Ready for Passengers
In March 2019, Calgary Transit opened the new Stoney CNG Bus Storage and Transit Facility located in north-central Calgary. The facility will be the first CNG transit bus storage and maintenance garage delivered through a P3 model in North America and the first project brought to market by the City of Calgary using the PPP Canada funding and framework.

The new facility provides a 44,300 square meter storage and maintenance facility and is the largest indoor Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus fueling complex in North America and one of the largest in the world. The project is to be certified LEED Gold, efficient in energy consumption and providing a safe and healthy work environment for staff.
The new facility houses over 400 40-foot buses, features 36 maintenance bays, on-site compressed natural gas fueling infrastructure, staff facilities and three Westmatic Transit-Master automatic bus wash systems.

The Transit-Master Wash System - Designed for Buses with Bike Racks
The Westmatic 4-Brush Drive-Through "Transit-Master" bus wash system is designed for fleets with a high-volume wash schedule. This system is capable of washing transit buses with front-mounted bicycle racks. The wash cycle time is approximately 90 seconds.
Westmatic's brushes are electronically controlled, eliminating the need for costly, high-maintenance pneumatic air cylinder components. A set of full-length vertical brushes wash the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. A set of half-length brushes safely wash above the front mounted bicycle rack.
The wash bay also features a high-pressure chassis wash that keeps the bus undercarriage free of corrosive elements.
Environmentally-Friendly
Westmatic wash systems are designed to use less water, fewer chemicals and less electricity than other machines on the market today.
Water Recycling System
In order to further reduce the ecological impact and water costs associated with washing a large fleet, Westmatic installed a water recycling system which will recycle up to 85% of the water used during the wash process. Instead of additional chemicals, Westmatic’s recycling system uses ozone injection to eliminate odor and bacteria.
